ESA's exoplanet-observer CHEOPS acquired the first image of its initial target star, following the …

NASA.gov brings you the latest images, videos and news from America's space agency. ESA's Solar Orbiter mission lifted off on an Atlas V 411 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 05:03 CET on 10 February on its mission to study the Sun from new perspectives. A European rover is part of the 2022 mission of the ExoMars programme that will also deliver a Russian surface platform to Mars. The rover will be the first mission to combine the capability to move across the surface and to study Mars at depth. Together they will address the question of whether life has ever existed on Mars. ESA is also looking ahead to the next logical step in Mars exploration – returning a sample from the surface of Mars. The sample return mission architecture is designed to continue the work begun by NASA's Mars 2020 rover. The mission. Mars Express (ESA) NASA is participating in a mission of the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency called Mars Express, which has been exploring the atmosphere and surface of Mars from polar orbit since arriving at the red planet in 2003. To find out the answer, the European Space Agency (ESA) has established the ExoMars programme to investigate the Martian environment.

NASA’s Mars 2020 mission is the first step of this international endeavour, and two further missions are under study to collect and return the samples (not shown on this graphic).

ExoMars begun in 2001 as part of the ESA Aurora program for the human exploration of Mars.

The ExoMars programme comprises two missions: the first – the Trace Gas Orbiter – launched in 2016 while the second, comprising a rover and surface platform, is planned for 2022. That initial vision called for rover in 2009 and later a Mars sample-return mission. NASA is collaborating with its various centers and the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop the advanced technologies and hardware needed for the campaign.

Just as other countries often participate in NASA Mars missions, NASA contributes scientific, engineering, and technical expertise to other world efforts to explore the Red Planet.

The Mars 2020 rover mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the Red Planet. The European Space Agency's (ESA) ExoMars program (Exobiology on Mars) is a series of missions designed to understand if life ever existed on Mars. ESA's official Mars Express website features the latest news and status reports on Europe's spacecraft orbiting around Mars. The Mars 2020 mission addresses high-priority science goals for Mars exploration, including key questions about the potential for life on Mars.
