Travel Guide: 2013 Feast Of The Black Nazarene / Pista Ng Poong Nazareno

How To Get There

Since it would be the feast day it is advisable that you do not bring a car. However if it is not possible for you not to bring your own vehicle  (e.g. if you are driving from the province) you may park them to  malls nearby the LRT/MRT stations.

Once you have parked your car take the MRT/LRT and drop off at the following station depending to where you want to go.

Carriedo Station: Quiapo Church

Central Station: Good waiting point along the route of the procession is near the City Hall.

United Nations Station:  Luneta (Start of Procession and Mass)

The Surprise That Never Was: Dad’s First Out Of Town Trip

Years ago my dad was suppose to leave for Kuwait, that was his chance to sit on plane and see the world  but then the gulf war happened. He never left. He never got to ride a plane ever since.

I was around seven or eight at that time but now I am almost running beyond the numbers of a month and it feels like I have to fill something missing that he should experience in life, a plane ride.

The idea came up nine months prior to his birthday when my favorite low cost carrier threw in a peso sale for their seats.

Total seat sale damage: Php 2,500 round trip tickets for two.

It was excruciating to keep a secret like that for me it was torture!

Anyways fast forward several months later come November 17 his birthday. It was suppose to be a secret until we get to the airport but my brother-in-law slipped his tongue and asked my father “What time are you leaving for Cebu?“, there goes my ten month top secret plan, ruined just several hours away from the actual time for the surprise!

I didn’t want my dad to act up surprise when we go to the airport so I told him that I know that he already knows about my plan to kidnap him, which was the whole point of having it as a surprise because I know that he would just say no if I tell him ahead of time just like how he acts up if I ask him to see a movie. Well thank God that everything went well no one was up on arms trying to defend him self from a possible abduction.

Okay so passed goes the drama no surprise moments at the airport for my dad and everything but I am still glad he went with the plan without a hitch.

We landed around 11PM at the Cebu-Mactan International Airport and I really wanna impress him with letting him know that I could actually go around the city without taking the easy way out, the cab. I wanted to take him and ride the local jeepneys or fierras but I thought that it’s kinda late and he might have been tired already so I decided to take a cab instead.

We came to our hotel nearly 12 midnight but this horrible incident left us with no choice but to sleep in the sofa, well that’s another story.

The next day was kinda busy and challenging for us. We had so much on the list but so little money well that’s true at least for me, I didn’t want dad to spend anything on this trip.

Our first stop was Magellan’s Cross and then we attended mass at the Basilica de Sto. Nino de Cebu. While hearing mass it reminded me about the stories I was telling him about cebu, that the way they sing in mass is exactly how my kuya Eli sings and he agrees!

My plan for the trip was experience the queen city it self plus the city of Carcar. I wanted to squeeze in the beach but our time and budget wasn’t allowing us but we were able to cover the basics.

 Carcar Market

St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church

Siomai Sa Tisa

 Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral

Cebu Provincial Capitol

Malacanan Sa Sugbu

Fort San Pedro and Plaza Independencia

I am glad that my dad enjoyed this trip. He even said that he didn’t feel any abdominal pain like how he feels if he is here in Manila.

For now I have to save again for our next trip, international maybe? 😉

My Great Bohol Adventure

Getaways every now and then with my closest friends used to be a staple in our lives until the day that we parted ways.

So this trip really meant a lot to me being with the friends that I treasure the most.

Our flight was in the afternoon and this is one of the few times that we fly our national flag carrier. It is not really because we prefer other brands but due to the competitive prices that low cost carriers offer, albeit the service.

We were just in time for check in, our flight was almost full so we were still lucky to get a window seat.

We checked in our bags at the counter though my bag was okay as a hand carry baggage but I opted to deposit it to maximize the cost that I had to pay. Yeah I am that stingy! lol!

I tell you taking PAL is a bit of luxury for me, the news paper, food and drinks are quite unnecessary for me for this domestic flight but yes it was nice to get some pampering from time to time.

I also love the audio outlet that you can access (if you have earphones -they don’t lend earphones on short flights) and listen to some music.

Most flight attendants on all the airlines that I have flown with are quite pretty but I would have to say that PAL has the prettiest ones and the best dressed FAs too.

Landing in Cebu is a milestone for my travel life. This island, the very same island that I would later fall in love with would be the southernmost province that I would reach for the next year or so.

But my first meeting with the queen city of the south is short lived as we scat our way to catch the last fast craft going to our final destination, the province of Bohol.

It was about a forty-five minute to an hour ride from the Cebu pier to Tagbilaran port, fast compared to a five hour journey if you take a regular ship. The craft was okay they have different accommodation classes that can suite you needs, actually for me they really didn’t matter as we spent our time at the top deck looking at the nearby islands and enjoying the cold breeze.

Darkness fell over the island and we were still on the road, honestly we were really tired at that time already. It was a good thing that we arranged land transfers with the hotel so the three of us were really comfortable inside this Mercedes van.

It was time for dinner when we finally got to check in to our hotel but we hanged around first and chatted trying to loosen up a bit. The hotel was on the main road and was about a two to three minute walk to the public beach, Alona. The accommodations right on the beach as expected are very expensive so a beach front room was out of the question. But then again our hotel was on a very good spot, it is near the ATM, a bar, eateries and convenience store exactly what we were looking for.

Along the shore are restaurants that offer a wide range of food choices but these choices seem to be not the one that my shallow pocket seems to be loving. But there weren’t that many choices as it was late in the night and we also wanted to eat by the sea, so there goes my money handed to the cashier with my eyes closed.

Food was okay, ordinary and nothing that would be so memorable for me. It’s just tastes something that you can buy anywhere decent.

We were tired but not ready to surrender our bodies to the comfy bed that awaits us, we went inside the restaurant and look at what greeted us! Fuse Ball! It was a delight for someone like me who likes football more than any other sport. However, that wasn’t the case with my playing skills or maybe my friend was really good though he played this for the first time that night? I don’t really know what I care about is that we had loads of fun paying on the table till we realize that it was almost midnight.

The following day started early and so was our rented van that would take us for our Bohol Countryside TourIt was the same van that we used to transfer from the port and hotel but with a different driver.

As the driver suggested we started with the farthest attraction first, the Chocolate Hill to make sure that we could gaze at the wondrous creation of God.

We couldn’t help our selves to be amazed on how beautiful the hills are in fact when we were still on the van and got to see the first few hill we spontaneously said “wooow” in chorus! lol!

Chocolate Hills

man-made forest
Loboc River Cruise Dancers
Clarins Ancestral House

The tour lasted the whole day. It was really awesome and memorable seeing those places and structures that I only get to see in the books when I was studying. I’d say it is a must to see these places that are part of our heritage and history because it connects you to the story, and the story no longer becomes just a story but a part of who you are.

We capped the night with dinner by the beach again and yes played fuse ball till midnight.

Day three.

Yesterday as we get on the van for our tour we noticed that there was this coffee shop that had just been blessed but was still closed so we thought of going to the shop after eating breakfast for some coffee the following day.

As we enter the shop the owner, ate Doris enthusiaticaly welcomed us and guess what? We were her first ever customer! Now that goes down to Coffee Talk’s history!

I ordered Cafe Americano and my friends order some hot drinks and pastries. Tita Doris was so accommodating that her shop’s name really stands to its reputation. If you are alone and she’s not busy she’ll be happy to chat with you, I’m sure!

It was still their soft opening but the shop seems to be really ready for more customers. I like how they designed the shop with cups, saucers and mugs around you from around the world that you can also purchase.

Being the shop’s first ever customers had perks, she generously gave us some spreads and bread (at no charge! =D ) and they were really delish! Since there were still no customers aside from us we continued chatting outside about her passion for coffee and how she started her shop from scratch.

After a few hours of chatting over coffee we decided to head to the beach, it was a lean season so there really no that much people around which I think is good because of the small shore of Alona Beach.

Well we are certified professional beach bums so we just chilled for the rest of the day on the beach.

The next day was our last day but our flight was still at night and our land transfer was scheduled in the afternoon. So we went back to the beach and hangout there again.

Believe it or not this was the only time that we actually took a dip. The previous days were either too busy or the sun wasn’t really shining much. But that day our last day we were blessed with a lot of Sun! so we catch as much Sun as we can and took a dip at Alona’s refreshing water.

Since we were there, we had lunch at our favorite restaurant again and of course so that we could have a chance to say goodbye to our beloved Fuse Ball.

We hangout by the beach all morning till the afternoon until it was time for us to leave and take the van back to the port then a boat to Cebu and finally a plane going to a place we call home Manila.

Our hearts was really heavy as we leave the place because the sun was just starting to shine the day that we left. We want to soak more under its bright light and feel the heat of summer. But we must. Leave.

Looking back now, without skipping a heart beat I would definitely go back to Bohol and explore the island once again. But I will look for another beach for me to hangout as Alona Beach seems to be too small for me specially that there are more big bodied foreigners than petite Filipinos there, and for a moment though it felt that I was abroad.

Top 12 Memories Of 2012

We are halfway through the last month of the year so I think it is just but proper to reminisce and list down the My Top 12 memories of 2012

Through the year I went through 6 major trips, two mountains, 4 cancelled trips and a lot of challenges and blessings so in thanksgiving of the year that was let me share the best memories I have of the year that was, yes this includes the bad ones.

1 Zambales Trip

One of the most fun filled trips of my life, I say that going to Anawanging and Nagsasa Cove is perfect for bonding moments as there is no electricity so you’d really have to talk and interact with each other. Being in such situation with these travel bloggers is something I would never forget fun was really not a problem throughout our journey.

2 Mt. Pinatubo Trip

Probably the biggest trip the Pinoy Travel Bloggers ever had was this year’s Mt. Pinatubo trekking adventure. 30 travel bloggers came together and trekked from Tarlac to the mouth of the Majestic Mount Pinatubo!

3 Cebu Trip

This is not the first time I have been to Cebu but what makes this trip special is that it was the first time my dad rode a plane and his first time to travel to the Visayas.

4 Ifugao Trip

Five schools and over 300 children smiled as we top load, trekked and hiked through the mountains of Ifugao and provide Ifugao children rewards for continuously studying while reminding them of preserving the Rice Terraces.

5  Cancelled Trips

This year recorded the most number of cancelled trips for me and I’m not counting here those that were cancelled trips that involves land transfers only. A total of four trips were cancelled this year mainly because of work.  =(

6 First Year Anniversary of Brownmantrips

Convinced by my the two people I look up to in blogging I decided to create a new blog focusing on my travels, but who would not get excited to jump in and fiddle their way into a self hosted blog with the so enthusiastically told stories by these two. I am glad I listened. Last November I just celebrated my first year of blogging with brownmantrips.com and for the first time my blog not only payed for it self but also earn a little on the side.

7 Blessings

This year was an unexpected year of blessings. From sponsored trips to more adsense hits blogging has brought me so much more than what I was expecting, for that I am so thankful. I will continue to explore and write about my experiences and work harder for my readers.

8 Hot Air Balloon Festival

Simply because it is magical and it is the first time to see hot air balloons. feels like being a child again.

9 Feast of The Black Nazarene

How can I forget as we waited more than 10 hours just to see the Nazareno? No bathroom breaks and with so little food we waited for the senyor.

10 Taiwan

This the first time that I went abroad alone. Adventure and getting lost was so fun in Taipei, people were really friendly but of course in all places there are bad elements. You’ll know what I mean on my memory for 2012 #12

11 Pundaquit

My heart was rushing faster than I can take my next step, out of breath, almost died so tell me how can I forget? LOL!

12 Loosing All My Money In A Foreign Land

Now you must be thinking what is the connection of the picture with loosing money? What you are seeing is a guy cooking up a bread delicacy in his truck along the streets of Taipei. That was what all I can afford at that time, three slices of a freshly pan fried bread with some vegetables.

How can I forget this moment when I almost was able to get back to the Philippines?

This is my entry to the Pinoy Travel Bloggers’ Blog Carnival for December 2012 with the theme

Taiwan Travel Video Part II

The second part of my trip to Taiwan. Again, as usual I got lost over and over… but hey that makes it fun!

This video includes the following:

  • How to get take the Taipei MRT
  • XinBeitou
  • Beitou Hot Springs Museum
  • Lung Nai Tang
  • Ketagalan Cultural Center
  • Shilin Night Market

Hope you enjoy the video!

Bohol Countryside Tour

This is a MUST DO when in Bohol.

Yes that was a statement of strong recommendation. Well there are two tours that that people our tour guides would offer you one is the countryside tour of Bohol and the other one is a Dolphin watching activity. We didn’t have enough time and money for this tour so we opted to do what we deemed to be a much more logical decision, see the Bohol Countryside!

Hahaha were those serious sounding sentences? hahaha!

The tour was part of the deal that we made with out hotel and since we are getting the tour packaged with our stay we got it for just 1500 pesos inclusive of a tour guide who doubles as your driver and the use of a Mercedes Van (fancy ey!? hehe) and its gas so all we have to take care now are the entrance and environmental fees if any to our destinations.

So lets go touring now!

Pit Stop#1 Chocolate Hills

Our first stop was the famous Chocolate hills. Made up of lime stones these hills are spread over hectares of land. You can climb the viewing deck where you can get a 360 view of all the hills.

Pit Stop#2 Butterfly Farm

The butterfly farm will take you to the world of metamorphosis. I like this stop for its educational value. Unlike other Butterfly farms that I have ever been to, the entrance fee that you pay includes a tour of the facility as well as a very entertaining explanation of how caterpillars turn into butterflies.

Pit Stop#3 Man Made Forest

One of my favorites in this tour was the Bilar Man Made Forest. As we enter the highway that the forest covers we immediately felt the sudden drop in temperature and the fresh air that the forest gives.

Pit Stop#4 Hanging Bridge

I had lots of fun at the hanging bridge as I ran yep without holding on to the rails while my friends gets more nervous because the bridge wiggles more as I run. There’s a secret on how to have balance as you cross the bridge, but I won’t tell coz it won’t be fun at all if you knew it. =D

Pit Stop#5 Loboc River Cruise

For lunch…. actually it was well in the afternoon when we got to the cruise, we ate our lunch on a floating balsa. The food was okay and over flowing, but of course be sure to arrive early so you can enjoy more pigging out on board.

Pit Stop#6 Tarsier

I personally don’t like the setup of this mini zoo that we went too. The tarsiers are caged and wide awake even though it is broad daylight. I would prefer seeing them in a sanctuary than a zoo, but yeah it was an experience seeing them still.

Pit Stop#7 Baclayon Church

One of the most famous landmarks in Bohol is the Baclayon church. The church that has a mix history of terror and hope.  You’ll surely wont be disappointed with the interior of this this church, though its a bit dark inside. >read more here

Pit Stop#8 Blood Compact Monument

In memory of the pact between the spaniards and the locals of Bohol, the blood compact, this monument was built over looking the sea. The place wood be jam packed with people trying to get their pictures taken so if you can make it your last stop do so, so you won’t waste your time waiting for your turn.

Taking the tour surely saved us a lot of money so if you are booking your hotels make sure to let them know that you want to include a tour so you can haggle. If you are staying in Panglao Island I would recommend Paragayo Resort where we stayed.

Brownmantrips’ First Anniversary!

Today we celebrate our first year anniversary of becoming a travel blog.

Blogging has opened up a lot of opportunities for me ever since I focused on making my blogs better and it would not have been possible if I was not talked into actually getting my own domain, well thanks to Doi of The Travelling Feet and Ed of Solo Flight Ed.

Throughout the year that was for brownmantrips, I was able to start Solo Traveling here and abroad. I also got to meet more of the members of the travel blogging community who are the funnest of them all!

with Doi and Ed at Asiatown IT Park, Lahug, Cebu City

I have been writing online ( well you can call it blogging but it was just more of an online journal for me) since 2006, never have I thought that it could come up to this stage where you actually benefit more than what you expect from blogging (aside from being my therapy) as on its first year Brownmantrips actually paid for its own. To maintain a self hosted blog actually requires some money so I am really glad that it actually made some for its self. I don’t actually earn my living from blogging (though it would be great if I could) but I am more than happy for having my sites self sufficient.

I guess the best part of blogging is meeting friends from every where. nothing beats that.

As for some who ask what do i mean about my tagline, I think this video from a soda company says it well.

As Brownmantrips sails through its second year I hope that I could meet on the road who ever gets to read my adventures. Again thank you too all of you who support brownmantrips! =)

Cheers!

The Brownman

TummyCalls: CebuPacific Food Review

For our first ever TummyCalls: Airline Food Reviews we will be rating the food that we had during our flight going to Cebu through 5J Cebu Pacific Air.

We will rating the food using three criteria Value For Money, Taste and Presentation. Up for our very first review is the Pizza Overload Pie!

Value : Rating 7/10

We know that airline food is expensive but having the Pizza Overload Pie priced at Php 100 is reasonable enough for me. Just think of the pizza bar that you can buy from your favorite convenience store with an SRP (suggested retail price) of about Php 50, considering the quality of the bread used and how much filling it has I’d say that it is worth the amount and yes it did satisfied my tastebuds.

Taste : Rating 8/10

The Pizza Overload is okay when it comes to how it tasted. You wouldn’t go loco or crave for it so much sometime after your flight but it wouldn’t disappoint you when it comes to taste. It has the basic taste that you’d find in a pizza, the tomato sauce, meat and a whole lot of cheese!

I also like the quality of the bread that they used, it give you a lasagna feel as you take your bite because how the thin sheets of bread was layered, yep not  just one thin sheet but it was layered.

I guess the only taste that I was trying to find more was the tomato sauce which should have gave it a bit of sour kick, but generally I think most Filipinos or anyone for that matter, who likes sweet pizzas would enjoy this dish.

Prsentation : Rating 6/10

Something that tastes good like this Pizza Overload Pie is actually served inside a sealed plastic. However once unwrapped you can now feel the soft bread of the Pie. Baked until it becomes light brown the Pizza Overload pie looks okay. It would throw you off your feet but it’s some thing that you wouldn’t pass on just because of the way it looks.

Overall Rating: 7 out of 10

If ever that you are on a Cebu Pacific flight and you need to answer your TummyCalls, I would suggest that you try the Pizza Overload Pie. It tastes good, fairly priced and wouldn’t disappoint your taste buds

This first episode of TummyCalls: Airline Food Reviews has been made possible by SkyScanner. Visit SkyScanner now to search for the lowest fare for your flight needs, I personally love it! =)

Baguio: Tam-awan Village

Nestled on the slopes of a mountain top, the Tam-awan Village was created to help preserve and nurture the traditional Cordillera culture while introducing it to the rest of the world.

Though this village was just recreated to simulate a real Ifugao village, you would still feel a great amount of energy embracing the mountain top.

A quick and friendly reminder at the village’s entrance

You’ll find all of the types of abodes inside the village. There are houses that were built just to house their grains, some for their family and some for their guests.

ferns and mosses growing quietly on the slopes of the village

You walk through the sloped walkways of the village till you reach the top, which on our case was filled with clouds at the time of our trip, it was like being in heaven and the angels were the only ones missing.

View from the upper portion of the village. Tam-awan village is heavily forested or planted… errr.. I don’t really know what words to say but you get what I am saying right? =D

Around the village you’ll find lots of art works by the Cordillera people and other artists. Art is everywhere yes, you’ll even find art in their bathrooms!

Male Bathroom

Female Bathroom

Diwata

The slopey side of the village.

The truth is this is more of a spiritual place for me than a tourist, here you can rent a traditional Ifugao house for a night and experience silence, peace and tranquility. You can feel the energy around you, the joy that you can’t explain specially at the peak while being embraced by the clouds.

Travel Guide: Cebu 3 Day Backpacking Itinerary

I have been getting lots of searches about backpacking southern Cebu so I thought of putting up this post so that you guys can get more information.

16:00 ETD back to accommodation, Dinner and Party

This  are the places that I have been to for two days and if you would notice there are still a lot of places that you can add up to your itinerary.

The funny part here is that I was suppose to go back to the city that night but didn’t and spent the night again in Moalboal (that is how much fun I had with the people there). I opted to stay for the again thinking that my flight was still at the night of the following day, guess what I read my flight itinerary incorrectly and missed my flight, it was supposedly in the morning! LOL! -well not really that funny when I was there costed me a whole lot more! o_O

As I go back to Cebu city I just hanged out with my friends who are based there, if you are planning to see the city as well HERE are the places that you can visit in the city. It was a really fun trip but unlike me just be sure to ready your flight itineraries correctly! hahaha!
